I’m delighted to welcome the dynamic Canadian conductor Tania Miller to the Madison Symphony Orchestra. Joining her will be the Grammy Award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey making his MSO debut performing the exquisite Elgar Cello Concerto. Tania will bring her unique interpretive gifts to Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony, regarded by many as his best. – John DeMain
Zuill Bailey, widely considered one of the premiere cellists in the world, has been featured with symphony orchestras worldwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, Indianapolis, Dallas, Louisville, Honolulu, Milwaukee, Nashville, Toronto, Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, Israel, Cape Town, and the Bruchner Orchestra in Linz, Austria. Mr. Bailey has appeared at Disney Hall, the Kennedy Center, the United Nations, Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd St. Y and Carnegie Hall, where he made his concerto debut performing the U.S. premiere of Miklos Theodorakis’ “Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra.” In 2017 Mr. Bailey won a best solo performance Grammy Award for his Live Recording of “Tales of Hemingway,” by composer Michael Daugherty. His celebrated “Bach Cello Suites” and recently released Britten Cello Symphony/Sonata CD with pianist Natasha Paremski, immediately soared to the Number One spot on the Classical Billboard Charts.
Canadian Conductor Tania Miller has distinguished herself as a dynamic interpreter, musician and innovator on the podium and off. Ms. Miller has appeared as a guest conductor in Canada, the United States and Europe with such orchestras as the Bern Symphony Orchestra, NFM Wrocław Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Oregon Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa), Vancouver Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Naples Philharmonic and Hartford Symphony, among others. Over the past 14 years as Music Director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, Tania Miller gained national acclaim for her passion and commitment to the orchestra and community. Acknowledged for the impact and success of her tenure, she was recently bestowed with the title Music Director Emerita of the Victoria Symphony. Recipient of the 2017 Friends of Canadian Music award from the Canadian League of Composers and Canadian Music Centre for her acclaimed commitment to contemporary music in Canada, Tania Miller has been a story about the impact of commitment and dedication to an orchestra and to the future of orchestral music through creative innovation and vision.
“It was tempting to compare this regional orchestra [the Madison Symphony Orchestra] even with a major international ensemble…the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.” – The New York Times
“When we are conducting, the power of the sound is found in our hands, and it’s projecting through us, back to the audience, back to the orchestra.” – Tania Miller
